Arambha Nepali Library Builds Culture and Community in North Carolina

Paru Timilsina

A community based effort to promote Nepali literature and cultural heritage is steadily growing in North Carolina. Arambha Nepali Library, a non-profit organization dedicated to Nepali language, literature, and community engagement, was officially registered on July 3, 2024, and began operations on August 31, 2024. Founded to create a welcoming space for reading and cultural connection, especially for older adults.

The library has since expanded to serve community members of all ages. Its leadership includes Founder and President Megha, Vice President Shiba Basnet, Secretary Indira Sapkota, Treasurer Ramita Chitrakar, Board Directors Paru Timilsina, Tejaswi Giri, and Nisha Shrestha, and Librarian Sahadev Poudel. Advisors from North Carolina and Nepal include Jitman Basnet, Chandra Giri, Ram Sundar Hada, Babita Basnet, and Mani Lohani, with digital outreach managed by Pramila Adhikari and Sonika Hada.

Since its launch, Arambha has collected 479 books donated by 55 individuals, covering genres from children’s literature to poetry, history, and autobiographies (count as of the end of 2025). The organization has hosted 12 cultural and community events, including Pustak Lokarpan, children’s reading sessions, Women’s Day and Galentine’s Day celebrations, environmental programs, and the popular Dashain Changa Chait.

The library has also extended its impact beyond literature by contributing more than 900 US dollars to local charitable causes since beginning operations. Reflecting on the library’s first full year, President Megha described 2025 as “a journey of learning, growth, and profound gratitude,” noting that the library added 224 books and welcomed readers of all ages. She said the year reaffirmed the belief that “books are not just to be read, but to be shared, discussed, and celebrated,” and expressed deep appreciation for the volunteers, donors, and community members who helped bring the library’s vision to life. Recently, the library organized “Lhosar Tashi Delek: Cultural Bites – Khapse Edition,” a hands-on cultural workshop where participants learned to make Khapse. It also partnered with NCNC, NWGN, Nepali Literary Society, and NASeA to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 7.

The organization is now preparing to participate in Nepal Day this April. According to the organization, its mission is to provide free access to books and educational resources, encourage reading habits, and strengthen cultural understanding within the community. Future plans include expanding reading programs, hosting more literary discussions, supporting local authors, and increasing community involvement.
